Bother
Well now. Hello. I smacked my ribs up a week ago; no breaks or even fractures, just huge bruises. Normally not a terribly serious injury but combined with my existing neurological condition, there have been debilitating spasms, seizures that are incredibly painful and prevent breathing, and so on. I’ve been off to A&E* twice in the wee small hours and I can report that Wythenshawe hospital (Manchester) is pretty tidy, Homerton (London) hasn’t changed a bit and nitrous oxide is nice.
I’ve had lots of supportive messages on Twitter and also a ton of emails; big thanks to Matt Baldwin for putting the word out to the Nervous Breakdown** crew. It all helps, a lot!
A week on and I’m in a foggy drug fog, misquoting song lyrics and cursing my phone for failing to recognise the word “bisquit”. This morning I got out of bed unaided for the first time, though, which is progress, although my eyes were bugging out with the pain, my legs were skittering all over the shop and I was making a noise like I was shitting a brick. It must have looked pretty funny, so, as they say, there’s that.
Anyway.
This blog’s meant to be about writing, specifically mine, specifically this book Get Well Soon. The good news is that shortly before the trip up north where I “had a fall”, I completed a total rewrite of a rather creaky old bit of the book, then adapted it into a stand-alone piece which I’ll post on The Nervous Breakdown. It’s a true story about another true story and there’s a giant spaceship in it.
Also progress: Current word count is 66,397 out of a target of about 80,000. Wahey!
*A&E isn’t a TV channel, it stands for Accident and Emergency. It’s the same as ER. The real ER, not the TV show.
**The Nervous Breakdown is an ace literary site. I’m one of the many contributing writers; there’s news and reviews but mainly it’s original writing - you can dip in anywhere and find a good read. Here’s the site and here’s my page.
